Heritage Scenarios & Decision-Making for all Built environment professionals

Accredited for 0.3 CPD (Category 1) credit with SACAP

This is a highly interactive, practice-based class where we explore the complex, messy, and often contentious world of South African heritage management together.

Rather than relying on theory alone, we step directly into real-world case studies, taking on the roles of Architects, Heritage practitioners, community representatives, developers, municipal officials, and Provincial Heritage authorities.

Through guided role-play, structured debate, and scenario-based decision-making, we experience the tensions, negotiations, competing values, and ethical considerations that influence heritage outcomes in South Africa today.

By engaging with these scenarios, you will learn how heritage decisions are actually made and you will become more strategic, empathetic, and confident when navigating the complexities that shape real built-environment projects.

What You Will Learn (4 Key Takeaways)

1. Practical Navigation of South African Heritage Processes

Gain confidence in navigating the National Heritage Resources Act, provincial authority processes, permit requirements, and heritage impact assessment pathways.

2. Stakeholder Dynamics & Negotiation Skills

Understand the motivations, pressures, constraints, and expectations of multiple role players — and learn how to negotiate, collaborate, and manage conflict effectively.

3. Real-World Case Analysis & Ethical Decision-Making

Engage with typical South African cases and unpack the social, political, and ethical dimensions underlying heritage decisions.

4. Strategic Thinking in Complex Built-Environment Scenarios

Learn how decisions made today carry long-term consequences for communities, policy, development, public memory, and architectural responsibility.

The heritage process is an arduous one in our professional world and consumes a great deal of unnecessary time due to unrefined systems. The course felt the same. There were some great take outs, but too few for the time spent. Simple clarification on the steps required for heritage section 34 submissions referencing the heritage act will be useful for minor heritage submissions.
