BROOKLYN HOUSE

BROOKLYN HOUSE

Architectural Brief Boogertman + Partners worked with developers Mile Investments to create a four phase precinct that differentiates itself from the current market trend; challenging both the typological status-quo of student living, as well as the architectural aesthetic. The concept moved away from the colourful building typologies that are associated with student housing and focused on the aspirational or more formal quality of educational architecture. The formality of ‘Education’ needed to be embraced within a contemporary aesthetic construct. The client further expected a unique design resolution regarding communal living in order to maximise financial returns and ensure economical feasibility, which was also addressed in the unique unit typologies.

BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE

BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE

The launch of its new state-of-the-art Biomedical Research Institute (BMRI) places Stellenbosch University (SU) at the forefront of biomedical sciences on the African continent. Situated at SU’s Tygerberg Campus in Cape Town, The BMRI is a world-class biomedical research complex on par with the best in the world and is unparalleled, not only on the African continent, but the entire southern hemisphere, in terms of its cutting-edge facilities and extensive research capacity. The facility houses more than 500 biomedical researchers and students, including some of the world’s foremost scientists in the fields of bioinformatics, tuberculosis, neuroscience, and urology. The leading-edge research emanating from the facility has a decidedly African focus and seeks to understand the genetic and biomolecular basis of diseases afflicting South Africa and the rest of the African continent. Construction of this R1,2 billion facility commenced in 2018 and was completed in 2023, despite major challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. The planning and design of this multifaceted complex followed a future-focussed approach resulting in a high-performance research hub that is modular, functional and sustainable.

7 ON BANTRY

7 ON BANTRY

F WJK Developments recently completed this R100 million five-storey residential apartment building. 7 On Bantry stands on the corner of Bantry and Rochester Roads, which takes you directly to Victoria Road, connecting Sea Point and Clifton. This development enjoys a prime location, offering its residents breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and the iconic Lion’s Head. This 5-storey building consists of 14 apartments ranging from 40m2 studio apartments to an exclusive 300m2 luxury penthouse. The site presented a set of unique challenges, including its limited space due to adjoining neighbours on two sides, a significant longitudinal slope and strict massing restrictions. Overcoming these obstacles required careful consideration during the design stage to maximise design efficiency and ensure the privacy of both the occupants of 7 on Bantry and neighbouring properties. The surrounding modern apartments blocks, smaller scale residential homes as well as the breathtaking mountain and ocean views, called for an architectural language celebrating its surrounding context.

DSC CENTRE

DSC CENTRE

The DSC Centre in Kimberley is one of the most contemporary developments in the city and its prominent position has been a draw card for a number of diverse tenants. The building was designed by Makespace Architects who had previously worked for the client on the development of another commercial property in Kimberley. The client subsequently purchased vacant land of approximately 7,000m2 next to that property in a prominent position in Memorial Road, opposite the North Cape Mall. After consideration the developer decided against a single tenant option and briefed the architects on a multi tenanted commercial office development with maximum coverage and density on the site.

MY SPACE STELLENBOSCH

MY SPACE STELLENBOSCH

Established as property developers in the retail and residential markets for many years, the advent of Covid in 2020 provided Abacus Development Company (Abacus) with the opportunity to take stock of their long term development plans and reconsider the way forward for two existing properties in their portfolio in Stellenbosch, the town in which their offices are based. At the same time, a hotel in Paradyskloof, a suburb of Stellenbosch, came onto the market. David Ludditt, CEO of Abacus said that when he viewed the property, he thought that this was something that could possibly work well with the other two existing properties in the Stellenbosh CBD and it was during that enforced period of introspection during Covid with very little construction taking place, that the co-living concept of My Space was born.

MY SPACE @PARADYS

MY SPACE @PARADYS

Set in the suburb of Paradyskloof just outside the Stellenbosch CBD with great views over the surrounding area, My Space @Paradys has emerged from an existing building, previously the Stellenbosch Lodge hotel, which, through a combination of refurbishment and new construction, has transformed into a vibrant co-living space designed by SVA International. The original building design was based on the traditional Stellenbosch barn style aesthetic, with pitched gable ends and exposed interior beams in the public areas. The existing hotel public spaces were converted into lounges and study areas, taking advantage of the double volume heights and sense of spaciousness that formed the architectural basis of the building.

MY SPACE @DORPSTREET

MY SPACE @DORPSTREET

My Space @Dorpstreet is the newest edition to the My Space family of residences in Stellenbosch. One of the defining aspects of the Dorpstreet building is its focus on creating functional spaces that cater to the needs of both residents and visitors. It is designed for comfort and convenience and houses a diverse range of amenities, including an in-house gym, deli, braai area, and laundromat. The first and second floors include a centrally located quiet library area, accompanied by board rooms and Zoom booths, where residents can work and study. TV3 Architects and Town Planners were instructed by My Space to design a modern and convenient co-living space that takes advantage of its ideal location in one of South Africa’s most prominent student towns. The location is a stone’s throw from Stellenbosch railway station, where the iconic Adam Tas and Dorp streets converge at the foot of the Papegaai mountain, forming a gateway to Dorp Street, which is a provincial heritage site.

MY SPACE @DROSTDY

MY SPACE @DROSTDY

My Space @Drostdy is a modern co-living accommodation solution for students and young professionals that was conceived to answer contemporary living needs through the creation of practical and aspirational spaces that offer occupants comfort and convenience and easy access to campus. Designed by dhk architects, with the My Space interior scheme implemented by dhki, the building encompasses lounges, deli, library, gym, laundry and study areas. The project’s design incorporates high-tech, future-thinking services and security features and an innovative and engaging interior scheme that together seamlessly support academic lifestyles while acknowledging the unique context of the location in the historical university town of Stellenbosch. The result is a vibrant living and working environment that appeals to a youthful audience, conducive to getting the best results from their tertiary education journey.
