The new commercial building at 14 Dock Road forms part of the Canal District precinct at Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront. Situated at the gateway to the Waterfront from the CBD, the V&A commenced with the redevelopment of the Canal District in 2015, with the development of Battery Park and Waterway House. With Battery Park as the focal point, the aim with the Canal District is to create a fully mixed used precinct within the greater V&A that forms a cohesive link with the CBD. The development of 14 Dock Road, led by the V&A’s Development Director Ernst Roodt, has allowed the continued improvement of the infrastructure and pedestrianisation of the Canal District with further development planned to complete the precinct in the near future.
Tshakhuma Mall recently opened its doors to provide convenient retail to the community of Tshakhuma and surrounds. Work on site began in October 2022 and Tshakhuma Mall opened on 28 September 2023. The development offers over 11,500m2 of retail in the Vhembe district of Limpopo. Located along the R524, on the outskirts of Thohoyando, Tshakhuma Mall was designed by MDS Architecture and is an enclosed single-level development with ample parking. The site is adjacent to one of the largest rural fruit and vegetable markets in the province. “Tshakhuma Mall features two prominent entrances with fan shaped feature lights welcoming shoppers to the mall,” explains Louis Pretorius, partner at MDS Architecture. “These feature cladding and prominent signage punctuated by pops of bright colour in order to create a portal around each entrance.” Upon entering the site, shoppers are welcomed by a “green wall” showcasing the mall name and an eye-catching artist mural in vibrant colours, which serves as a selfie wall.
As the most recently completed addition to the Oxford Parks family, 5 Parks Boulevard opened its doors to this exclusive urban quarter during September 2023 - attracting a diverse array of global businesses to the increasingly popular mixed-use destination. Seamlessly integrating into the urban context of a pedestrian-centric neighbourhood developed by Intaprop, the building blends into the alluring streetscape along the first completed section of Parks Boulevard – a tree-lined midblock avenue which transforms the large-scale street grid of Dunkeld into a rationalised, highly walkable lifestyle node, linking the Rosebank CBD to the suburb of Illovo.

Owned today by Liberty Group Limited, Liberty Two Degrees Limited and Pareto Limited, Sandton City was originally developed by Rapp and Maister. Michael Rapp and Hilliard and Eli Liebowitz had originally planned to develop homes and a small shopping centre on the 32 hectares of land but their larger vision was the catalyst not just for Sandton City Shopping Centre but for the greater Sandton area that we find today. Despite established retail in the Johannesburg CBD as well as Hyde Park and Rosebank, Michael Rapp had visited a number of modern, covered shopping malls in France and Canada and saw the potential for developing something similar in Sandton. Many considered the new development doomed to fail but the office tower was quickly fully tenanted and the shopping centre experienced early success due to the fact that the developers had persuaded many top retailers to take a chance on the new centre from the outset, thus providing a strong retail mix with established brands.
Design Partnership proudly undertook the design and construction of Seacom’s new 2,000m² Head Office in Sandton. It was successfully completed in 2023. This office serves as a testament to how an office environment designed strategically can unite a company’s culture and its people, creating an exceptional workplace. Globally companies are recognising the idea that the office is less about work and more about place. Similarly, Seacom, one of the leading data connectivity providers in South Africa, wanted a place that could best serve their people and their brand. A place that seamlessly integrates the digital and physical aspects of their business. A place that showcases who they are and embodies what they value.
