Light Steel Framing in Practice including modular and POD Construction

1 CPD SACAP and ECSA credit (Cat 1)

Once light steel framing is being considered for a project, the practical questions begin: Where is it most suitable? Which form of LSF should be used? What information must be resolved before engineering begins? What should the Architect or consultant specify? How does the project progress from design through manufacture to installation?

This practical course explores how light steel framing is applied across a range of building types and delivery approaches, including stick-built, panelised, modular or pod, truss-only, infill and hybrid systems.

Participants will learn how to translate a project brief into the information required by the LSF engineer, detailer, manufacturer and installer. The course covers complete-system specification, technical performance, professional responsibilities, manufacturing information, site readiness, erection and handover.

The course concludes with four practical case studies that demonstrate how the LSF strategy must change according to the project type:

  • Housing and repetitive low-rise development
  • Schools, healthcare and mass accommodation
  • Multi-level buildings and vertical extensions
  • Modular, pod, truss-only and hybrid delivery

No previous knowledge or experience of light steel framing is required. This course is intended as a practical introduction for professionals who need to brief, coordinate, specify, procure or oversee LSF work.

The course does not teach structural calculations or proprietary manufacturing software.

COURSE OUTLINE

Session 1: Where Light Steel Framing Fits

  • What light steel framing is in practice
  • Load-bearing walls, floors, roof trusses and infill systems
  • Panelised elements, volumetric modules and hybrid components
  • Residential, housing and repetitive low-rise applications
  • Schools, healthcare, multi-level buildings and warehouses
  • Vertical extensions, modular or pod construction and specialist applications
  • How geometry, repetition, weight, transport and performance affect suitability

Session 2: From Project Brief to LSF Concept

  • Choosing between stick-built, panelised, modular or pod, truss-only, infill and hybrid approaches
  • Architectural grids, spans, storeys, openings and roof geometry
  • Cladding, finishes, panel dimensions and tolerances
  • Transport limitations and erection sequencing
  • Structural, fire, thermal, acoustic and moisture requirements
  • Services, façade interfaces, foundations and site conditions
  • Professional responsibilities, information flow and design freeze

Session 3: Specifying the Complete LSF Assembly

  • Specifying the complete system rather than only the steel stud
  • Framing, tracks, joists, trusses and connections
  • Sheathing, linings, insulation, membranes and cladding
  • Fasteners, anchors and corrosion protection
  • Fire, thermal, acoustic, moisture and durability performance
  • Drawings, schedules, rational design and product information
  • Test evidence, quality requirements and professional responsibilities

Session 4: From Design to Manufacture and Installation

  • Engineering, detailing and coordinated information
  • Member design, connections and panelisation
  • Shop drawings, bills of material and design freeze
  • Roll-forming, factory assembly and quality control
  • Packing, transport, storage and delivery sequencing
  • Site readiness, set-out, anchors and access
  • Lifting, temporary stability, bracing and weather protection
  • Interfaces, inspections, snagging and handover

Session 5: Four Practical LSF Case Studies

Case Study 1: Housing and Repetitive Low-Rise

How repetition, programme, thermal performance, local labour and site logistics influence the LSF strategy.

Case Study 2: Schools, Healthcare and Mass Accommodation

How services, fire and acoustic requirements, repeatable rooms, programme pressure and installation sequencing must be coordinated.

Case Study 3: Multi-Level Buildings and Vertical Extensions

How the low structural weight of LSF can be used while addressing existing-building capacity, access, movement, bracing, tolerances and interfaces.

Case Study 4: Modular, Pod, Truss-Only and Hybrid Delivery

How to select the appropriate level of off-site manufacture, define package boundaries, allocate responsibility and map the project journey from design to installation.

WHO IS THIS FOR?

Innovative Building Technologies Specialist Calvin van der Merve

Calvin van der Merwe is the Founder of the African Light Steel Building Association (ALSBA) and a construction and building-systems practitioner with more than 17 years of experience across quantity surveying, commercial management, specification-led sales, national sales leadership and business development. Most recently, Calvin led business development across Sub-Saharan Africa for FRAMECAD, working with developers, architects, engineers, contractors, manufacturers and government stakeholders on light gauge steel framing technology, project feasibility, manufacturing capability and delivery strategy. His wider career has included construction commercial management, architectural specification, building-materials leadership and project-facing roles from early feasibility through procurement and delivery. Through ALSBA, Calvin is now focused on improving practical industry knowledge, professional education and market access around light steel framing and modern construction in Africa. His teaching approach is practical and commercially grounded, with an emphasis on helping professionals ask better questions, compare options on merit and make stronger project decisions.
