In this one day course, direct your attention towards the role of Architectural professionals in preserving and impacting heritage, and learn how to do the same in your professional practice. 

COURSE CONTENT

1. Introduction to Heritage 

  • Engage with and develop an understanding of heritage generally, and its relation to the built environment specifically.


2. The Heritage Framework

  • We look at the National Heritage Resources Authority (NHRA) in order to get equipper with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the regulatory framework governing cultural heritage in South Africa.


3. Processes and Permits

  • Gain insights into the legal and procedural aspects of heritage resource management as well the process of obtaining permits for alterations and demolitions


4. Heritage and the Architect

  • Take a look at Architectural work which responds to heritage and the impacts it has on heritage


5. Working with heritage

  • Case Studies on practical tips and tricks on working with heritage projects and proposals


This workshop is engaging and will involve a Q&A component. A CPD certificate of completion will be awarded to each attendee.

The heritage process is an arduous one in our professional world and consumes a great deal of unnecessary time due to unrefined systems. The course felt the same. There were some great take outs, but too few for the time spent. Simple clarification on the steps required for heritage section 34 submissions referencing the heritage act will be useful for minor heritage submissions.

Bryan Wintermeyer, a seasoned heritage and architectural professional, boasts 20 years of diverse experience in the field, spanning local and international projects. Bryan's academic journey includes studying Architecture at the University of Port Elizabeth and later pursuing Conservation of the Built Environment at the University of Cape Town. He actively engages with heritage, history, and culture-related organizations, contributing to local advocacy groups and governmental bodies. Currently with The Workplace Agency, he focuses on heritage-sensitive projects, playing a pivotal role in significant endeavors such as the Donkin Reserve Environmental Upgrade and the restoration of historical railway sheds in Kariega.
