Designing for Clinics and Health Care facilities

Become proficient in the range of legislative documents that govern the design of primary healthcare facilities, clinics and other medical-related facilities.

The design of Clinics and Primary Healthcare Facilities are governed by the R158. This is a legal document but seldom known or understood by architects and designers. There is a growing need to provide medical care facilities in SA (be it private or public). 

You can become a designer who is more informed and au fait with good practice and compliance around primary health care facilities

This workshop will give you a better understanding of the R158, various IUSS documents, pharmacy act as well as Part S of the SANS regulations as they pertain to designing for people with disabilities.

COURSE CONTENT

1. Comparison between private practice and public Primary Health Care as an introduction.

2. Five building components / elements that that both have in common:

i. Disabled parking bay

ii. Ramp and entrance into the facility

iii. Patient (assisted) toilet

iv. Procedure / Treatment / Clean Utility room

v. Consulting room

(We look at R158 and hospital design guide / IUSS)

3. Pharmacy

i. The Act (specifically Chapter 2 – premises, facilities & equipment)

ii. Layout – spaces required – might include…Secure delivery, manager’s office, dispensary, kitchen, private counselling area, dispensing counter, security (in general)

  • The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996 (Act No. 108 of 1996) gives a clear framework in which access for persons with disabilities is to be viewed.
  • The stated purpose of the Employment Equity Act, 1998 (Act No. 55 of 1998)
  • The Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993 (Act No. 85 of 1993)
  • The Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act
  • National Strategic Framework on Universal Design and Access – Government Gazette, 15 October 2021
  • SANS Part S


This workshop is engaging and will involve a Q&A component. A CPD certificate of completion will be awarded to each attendee.

Meet your instructor

Professional Architect Arinda Swart

After graduating from the University of Port Elizabeth, BNM seconded her to the OR Tambo region to head up the Port St Johns office in 2005. There she gained invaluable experience with rural public hospitals - the two most noteworthy being Holy Cross Hospital near Flagstaff and Madwaleni Hospital near Elliotdale. In 2010 she continued involvement with Madwaleni hospital and St George’s hospital but also taking on new healthcare projects, specifically as Healthplanner - on Kwanonkqubela Community Health Centre, Motherwell CHC and Meje CHC. She has also been asked to serve on review panels for other projects like Dihlabeng Hospital.As the mother of a disabled child, she has a special interest in universal design and a passion for designing for people with special needs. Arinda is a registered professional architect with both SACAP and SAIA and plays an active role in the local charter - Eastern Cape. She is one of three Directors of the company Brinkman Ndayi McAll. At the age of 46 she combines youthful energy with experience.
